Well it is that time of year again that we all have the opportunity to review the list of last years resolutions and if your like me just copy them to this upcoming years. The idea of new resolutions is always attractive because they usually take the form of small little habits or practices that will over time begin to either show in our bank, health or even relationships.

Well humans are not the only creatures that benefit from positive New Year Resolutions, even Trees appreciate the change to their environment, but they need our help to do it. Below are few simple steps to take to give your tree a happier and healthier new year.

1. Good bye Grass, Hello Mulch.

Too often our water guzzling grass just acts like a nutrient net and often is the culprit for majority of the root rot we see in our native trees. Simply removing the grass within the dripline and back filling about 6″ of organic mulch not only will save on your water bill but will give your tree more nutrients and the chance for the proper amount of water.

2. Give your tree a Multi Vitamin.

We know the importance of taking supplements to balance out our human diet, but trees in the urban environment also need some form of supplementation. It is best to have an Arborist test your soil and see what exactly is missing and then set your tree on an annual or bi-annual vitamin and mineral injection for your trees. The difference in your trees will be noticeable!!

3. Think Twice Before Cutting.

I know I personally would prefer no haircut over a BAD haircut. Well to trees it is even more important than mere cosmetic gains. Over pruning is unfortunately one of the biggest problems facing our urban trees and most of the time people think they are doing something beneficial. Just like in surgery less is best assuming what is removed is the part that should be removed. developing a strong Structure in your tree is the gift that keeps giving for years to come. While leaving those little interior branches to help with the photosynthesis process will also be appreciated.

If you would like other great ideas on the proper care for your trees please visit us at www.aplustree.com or contact us directly toll-free at 866 815-2525. Together we can make 2010 a healthier year for our landscape and ourselves.
